An Environmentally Responsible Paint Company

July 7, 2008

Moving our daughter into her own room (my former office) is a priority for our family right now — and beige walls with dark burgundy trim just don’t cut it for a girl whose favourite colours are pink, purple, and baby blue.

Imagine my delight when Amanda from Village Decor, in Port Perry dropped off some information about a new environmentally-friendly paint line they now carry.

The company is called Yolo Colorhouse and it bills itself as “The Environmentally Responsible Paint Company”. Definitely a tall order, however, at first glance it appears they is “walking the talk.”

The paint itself has a zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) base and contains no ammonia, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, or crystalline silica (none of which sound particularly appealing to me). Their paints are certified by Green Seal, an independent, non-proft organization setting standards for environmentally-friendly products.

Beyond their paint, it is obvious they are making a commitment to corporate sustainability with some of their other business decisions:

  • Paint cans are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.
  • Stir sticks are FSC-certified wood.
  • Labels and marketing materials are all 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

Eager to get started on our re-decorating project, the kids and I popped into Village Decor to pick up the paint. Elora choose a lovely (princess) pink for the walls and a more vibrant deeper shade of (bubble gum) pink for the trim.

While you are definitely paying a premuim for this product, as with everything in life, you really do get what you pay for. And from my perspective as a Dad, this is definitely worth the investment.

p.s. According to the Yolo website, Village Decor is one of only 5 stores in Ontario that have made the significant investment in this product line. On your next visit to P’lovers, take a walk down the street and check it out.

I spent a few hours painting yesterday (with lots of help from my two assistants) and the Yolo paint is truly fabulous! It covers exceptionally well, the colour is wonderful and vibrant, and there is absolutely no smell! Today I work on the trim!
